Connecting people, engaging society
JRS runs an internship programme which links refugees with business partners. In this edition of Journeying, Foeng Sugiman, Managing Director at Multi Mitra Group shares his perspective on being a mentor to his company’s intern – 25-year-old Afghan refugee Mr. Z.
A place to call Home
Although she was busy preparing for her resettlement in Canada, Zia, a graduate from our JRS digital marketing course, made time to chat about her journey as a refugee, her passion and her dreams. She has inspired Rachel, our youth volunteer who interviewed her, to dare to dream.
A new journey
“Finally, it is now my chance to start a new life!” Malik, a graduate from our digital marketing course and an intern with Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Asia Pacific, said excitedly. Elaine was happy to see Malik looking so relaxed when she caught up with him on Zoom before he resettled to Australia…
Mission in action
“…. So many things now feel possible for me,” Liaqat beamed excitedly when he shared his experience as an intern for CHARIS.
“….happy to have been given the opportunity because every internship is a chance to learn and improve,” quipped an equally elated Mukhzan.
More than Mentors
“By God’s grace, our Communications Ministry (CM) team at Church of Divine Mercy (CDM) was given this opportunity to personally interact with a refugee intern like Joy and develop a beautiful friendship. We have become more aware of God’s presence in everything and in every person,” reflects Tricia.
YOU can make a positive impact on the lives of a refugee family!
IMPART TECHNICAL SKILLS / DIGITAL TRAINING / OFFER AN INTERNSHIP
Our JRS Internship programme aims to link business partners who share our values and are passionate about imparting their skills with refugees/ asylum seekers who are keen to take on internship opportunities. By teaching the interns useful skills, our partners can offer them a chance for a better future. Given the opportunity, interns can also contribute to businesses which engage them.
Many in the refugee community are well educated, articulate and seek to be productive. They come with expertise and experience of value to the receiving country and a dedication to learn new skills. Refugees and asylum seekers who have completed school and adults of working age need to be engaged meaningfully and need livelihood opportunities. This gives them a sense of purpose, increases self-esteem, resilience and decreases vulnerability to trafficking and other forms of exploitation.
