Empowering refugee communities with Professional Skills, building Resilience & nurturing Independence
Many in the refugee community are driven to upskill themselves. They seek to be productive in order to provide for their families. However, they may have gaps in their technical skills because they have little or no access to higher education or vocational training. This limits the opportunities available to them.
With the fast changing technological advancements and digital revolution taking place worldwide, they are likely to be left further behind.
How can we bridge the gap in education and engage refugees meaningfully in this digital world?

JRS Singapore embarked on this exciting journey when we initiated the Education for Economic Empowerment (E3) Programme in collaboration with JRS Asia Pacific in July 2021.
E3 will equip those who have been forcibly displaced with industry level skills and competencies leading to internships and/or other livelihood opportunities. JRS Singapore has collaborated with like-minded expert academic partners to deliver courses such as Digital Marketing, Web Development, UI/UX, Cisco networking and more. Upon completion of these courses, ASRs will earn certifications and be empowered with professional IT Skills.

How can I support this E3 programme?
JRS Singapore recognizes the importance of partnering with academic institutions, businesses, social enterprises, volunteer organizations and individuals who share our vision. Please contact us at sgp.e3project@jrs.net or contact@jrssg.org if
- you (individually or perhaps with a group of friends) or your organisation would like to sponsor a cohort of about 30 students.
- you are able to provide technical or digital training, and are open to offering an internship to individuals in the refugee community.
Keen to learn more about our programmes? Our team will gladly take the conversation forward with you!

JRS Singapore has been blessed with big-hearted supporters and tireless volunteers. Crisleen, JRS E3 programme lead highlights two workshops which were made possible because of such acts of generosity.

Another successful E3 journey
From being unable to understand basic English when he left Afghanistan as a 13 year-old teenager, to graduating as a Cisco Certified Network Associate, JRS volunteer Philip Prasetio shares this story of Sam’s determination to overcome his adversities and his desire to pay it forward.

Psst...have you heard of our E4 Programme?!
No, we haven’t renamed our core digital education programme, but we put in an extra E in the heading of this article for a reason! Crisleen, our JRS Project Lead is bursting to tell us the good news about our Expanded (yes that’s the reason for the extra E) E3 programme…

Surviving Against the Odds
Refugees in Thailand have no legal rights to work, access education, or receive medical services. But this has not deterred many of them who want to upskill and further their education. Philip, our JRS volunteer speaks with a graduate from our digital marketing course who has shown such perseverance.

Believe in yourself
Farah*, a 19-year-old living in Indonesia with her parents, is one of our first female graduates from the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Professional course in our E3 programme. She tells us her story.

Striving to Excel
JRS intern Sam* took on a new role last year — putting together a 2-week Microsoft/Google workshop (MS/GW) for refugee students. He tells us more about the new programme which is curated, taught and run by refugee interns all ready to teach others in the refugee community.
